Robotics market: fall in 2001 but hopes for 2002
According to the Robotic Industries Association (RIA), the North American robotics market decreased by 30% (in units) and by 35% (in value) in 2001, compared to 2000. 8,964 robots were ordered by Amercian customers, for a total amount of $679.9 million. "It makes 2001 the weakest year for robot sales since 1995", estimates the RIA.
For Rixan Associates, though, the sales of robots and services rose 38% in Q1 2002 (November 2001 to January 2002), which could indicate that "the industrial recession of 2001 may be waning, and that manufacturers are gaining confidence in the economy". Rixan is the distributor of Mitsubishi and Samsung robots and serves an installed base of 8,500 robots.
