Robotic Construction Crew starts to work
The first demonstration of NASA's Robot Construction Crew has been achieved with success last week. The project, developped at JPL Laboratory, consists of a set of robots designed to work as a team. They are able to perform complex tasks such as grasping, lifting and moving paylods, along with the ability to navigate through obstacles.
The demonstration showed two robots acting autonomously, coordinating themselves to approach, grip and carry a container over more than 50 meters. "The two robots tightly coordinate their individual sensory and control behaviors in an uncertain, fast changing environment to accomplish a common goal," said Dr. Terry Huntsberger, project system engineer at JPL.
This experiment and the whole project intend to demonstrate the utility of robots able to replace men in the construction of structures on Mars.
