First successful Telesurgery across the Ocean
The world first telesurgical operation - dubbed "Lindbergh" - was completed by a team of French surgeons located in New York and operating on a patient in Strasbourg.
The IRCAD (Institute for Research into Cancer of the Digestive System) team used Zeus Robotic Surgical System, designed by Computer Motion, controling their moves on TV screens. The operation consisted in removing the gallbladder of a patient and was accomplished in a 45 minutes procedure.
Technically, this world "premiere" was made possible by a transatlantic high-bandwidth fiberoptic link , provided by France Telecom. This 10 megabits/second transatlantic service allowed surgeons to get a return video image of their movements in less than 200 milliseconds.
